As clever as the ForTwo and Roadster-Coupe are they only offer Smart fun for two people. Now with the ForFour you can take along a couple of friends too. Sharing much of its underpinnings with Mitsubishi's forthcoming Colt that Smart has managed to differentiate it so well from its Japanese cousin is rather impressive. To look at it's unmistakably Smart, the two-tone body with plastic panels highlighting its 'Tridion' safety structure makes it stand out against its supermini rivals. Inside it's more of the same, Smart's wacky interior detailing like pod-like instruments and novel ventilation outlets a pleasing alternative to the rather staid norm. Comfort is good too, front and rear, the seats versatile too these compensating for the rather small boot.
Equipment, styling and build are all impressive and it delivers on the road too. Sure, it's not quite as sharp to drive as Ford's Fiesta, but the eager engines punch above their weight and the snappy manual gearshift works well - avoid the semi auto that retains Smart's typically ponderous shift. The entry-level 1.1-litre has loads of character, making it our choice, but there are larger engines and diesels on offer too that all work well. Slightly more expensive than some of its rivals, particularly the range topping Brabus version, but it makes up for this with its entertaining nature, distinctive style and neat interior.

With 80bhp from its diminutive mid-mounted turbocharged engine, lightweight construction and high levels of grip the tiny open-topped sporting offering from Smart is a highly entertaining package. Even before you drive it it'll grab your attention with its funky styling, its squat looks, with its wheels pushed out into the corners giving it a stance that while obviously sporting is impossibly desirable, unashamedly appealing to those buyers who place fun before everything else on their priorities. Fun it may be but as it comes from the masters of the microcar then it's reasonably practical too. The coupe, which costs an additional ?1,000 over the roadster, comes with a large glassy hatch for luggage, complimenting the surprisingly capacious front boot, its removable hard-top panels more desirable to owners who park their Smarts on the street at night. Roadster buyers get a canvas roof as standard, but the different roof systems can be specified for either car should you want to. The interior is as stylish as the exterior though oddment storage is rather lacking.
Performance is brisk rather than startling, but we've rarely had so much fun at such sensible speeds, the entertaining engine thrum and the turbo chirping on the over-run adding to the experience. The semi-auto transmission carried over from the City-coupe is still ponderous despite changes to speed it up, but it doesn't take long to learn how to drive around its quirks. Indeed, part of the fun is the satisfaction of making smooth fast shifts via the column-mounted paddles. The steering is light, too light, but direct though the wheel feels massive and brushes the legs of some divers. Other quibbles include the offset pedals, though thankfully they don't interfere with driver comfort. More fun than a 206CC, funkier than a MX-5 and offering a grin-per-mile ratio that betters many much more expensive rivals the Smart Roadster-coupe is an extremely desirable machine.

With the Forfour, roadster and roadster-coupe now expanding the smart car line-up the original smart city-coupe joins the obvious naming of its relatives and becomes the Fortwo from 2004. The smart might have received a relatively muted response from the public when it was first launched, but the diminutive smart has slowly taken hold of the public's consciousness and is now a familiar sight around towns and cities. Now it's not just visible around city centres - the smart has gone all suburban being bought as a second car for families or a first car to younger buyers.
More than just a fashion accessory, the Fortwo is ideal for those wanting clever and convenient urban transport. Power comes from a rear-mounted three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine that provides enough power to cope with the cut and thrust of town traffic and offers excellent economy too. There's a cabriolet version to enjoy the sun in and the heinously expensive but tremendous fun Brabus model which features dramatically improved performance and more menacing sporting looks. As fun as the Brabus version is it's the standard car that's the best choice. The six-speed sequential automatic transmission, which is offered with a paddle-shift, might be ponderous, but you soon get used to it and drive around its shortcomings. Around town the ride is rather firm, crashing over poor road surfaces and it isn't that good at cornering hard either, but that's hardly the point. The choice for those wanting uncomplicated motoring with a splash of style the smart is an enjoyable and practical solution, so long as it's only for two!
